(December 21, 2020) On this day seven years ago, my father and my grandmother died in my parents’ home in Fayetteville. I had just moved back, and facing this loss and navigating a new job while parenting a toddler was daunting. I am so grateful for the support I found in this community, including Hospice of CNY and HOPE for Bereaved.
I want to acknowledge these organizations, and others like them, for their Herculean effort during these times. We need to listen to and support healthcare providers, mental health professionals, and caregivers when they tell us what they need.
Over $4.9M was cut from the 2021 Onondaga County Health Department budget, which takes funds away from strategic plans to prevent chronic diseases, substance abuse, and support mental health. We cannot abandon our commitment to this work. As a County Legislator, I will support a properly funded health department, so our community can survive and thrive.
We are all experiencing a form of grief right now, including the way our celebrations have had to be muted. I hope you find joy this holiday season. Please wear a mask and socially distance. We are all in this together. Here’s to 2021!
