Happy Pride Month!
(June 1, 2021) Today marks the first day of Pride Month, and it is my honor to share that I am endorsed by the Victory Fund. The mission of this PAC is to support LGBTQ candidates in an effort to increase the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials. I know it’s easy to miss the fact that I’m bisexual, which is one of the reasons why I openly share my pride - representation is necessary in government so all voices can be heard and valued.
LGBTQ teens too often bear heavy burdens of discrimination and exclusion, as well as higher rates of violence and self-harm. I believe that kids and young adults, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ, benefit when they see openly LGBTQ people in their communities—it is very powerful to see diversity and people like you. It affirms that you belong and are loved!
When elected to the Onondaga County legislature, my focus on health and equity across all policies will help build support and services to our LGBTQ community members. We are more likely to include the social and mental health supports of LGBTQ people in our policies if we make visibility and respect our standard.
The Town of Manlius raised the Progress Pride flag for the first time last June, and it was wonderful to stand beside my next-door-neighbors and friends, Jeanne Lagergren and Pamm Mosey, as they raised the flag this morning (see photo above). It is encouraging to see the nearby Villages of Fayetteville, Cazenovia, and the Town of DeWitt doing the same this year.
